When the community wants to know why is such a big cutting required and your only answer is 'because the train has to chase the grade', you know you need a better explanation. This cross section diagram, created for the Blackburn Level Crossing Removal project undertaken by CPB, was designed to explain why there was a big cutting being made on the east side of the level crossing.
Finding the right 'why' to answer first is the key to creating an easily understood infographic. Showing the change in elevation between the start and finish point made the 'grade' that the trains have to chase obvious and the reason for the depth and extent of the cutting were then easy to understand. The answer to the question required a solid understanding of the engineering requirements and then a translation from the engineering explanation into something that could be used in community meetings and on posters.
